Description

We are currently recruiting for an experienced Critical Care & Respiratory Physiotherapist to join a leading NHS acute hospital.
This is an excellent opportunity to work within a specialist multidisciplinary team, delivering high-quality physiotherapy across Intensive Care Units (ICU), High Dependency Units (HDU), cardiothoracic, cardiology and acute respiratory services. The successful candidate will manage a complex caseload of critically ill patients, providing specialist respiratory assessment, rehabilitation and discharge planning to optimise patient recovery and facilitate safe transitions through the acute pathway.

Key Responsibilities:
• Independently manage a complex caseload of critically ill patients across Intensive Care Units (ICU), High Dependency Units (HDU) and acute respiratory services.
•Assess and treat mechanically ventilated, tracheostomised and high-dependency patients using advanced clinical reasoning and evidence-based physiotherapy interventions.
•Deliver specialist respiratory physiotherapy, including airway clearance techniques, ventilator weaning, tracheostomy management, inspiratory muscle training (IMT) and secretion clearance.
•Assess and manage patients across cardiothoracic, cardiology, neurology, neurosurgery, vascular, general surgery and general medicine services.
•Deliver early mobilisation and rehabilitation programmes to minimise ICU-acquired weakness and maximise functional recovery.
•Undertake comprehensive neurological, respiratory and functional assessments to develop person-centred treatment plans.
•Mobilise critically unwell patients, including those requiring invasive and non-invasive ventilation and post-operative care.
•Work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams during ward rounds, family meetings and discharge planning to ensure coordinated, patient-centred care.
•Contribute to safe patient flow across the acute pathway through effective discharge planning, equipment prescription and liaison with community and rehabilitation services.
•Maintain accurate clinical records, assessment reports and documentation in accordance with HCPC, CSP and organisational standards.

Essential Requirements:
•Degree in Physiotherapy.
•Current HCPC registration.
•Previous experience working within Critical Care, Intensive Care Unit (ICU) or Acute Respiratory Physiotherapy services.
•Experience delivering specialist respiratory physiotherapy interventions, including airway clearance and ventilator weaning.
•Experience undertaking neurological, respiratory and functional assessments within acute hospital settings.
•Excellent clinical reasoning, assessment and communication skills.
•Ability to independently manage a complex caseload and prioritise effectively.
